Founded as a railroad town site on the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869, Elko has served for generations as the provincial capital of an enormous cattle ranching empire. Sixty years ago Lowell Thomas called Elko“ the last real cowtown in the American West. ”Until about 15 years ago, that was still a good thumbnail description.
